What Is TMJ Disorder?
TMJ disorder or TMD is a condition that affects the temporomandibular joints (TMJs), causing pain throughout the head, neck, and jaw. The TMJs are located on the sides of your face and connect to the base of your skull. When overworked or damaged by facial trauma, these joints can become inflamed and result in popping, clicking, and difficulty eating or speaking.
The most common causes of TMD include stress, teeth grinding (bruxism), a misaligned bite, or sudden damage (sports-related).
Symptoms of TMJ Disorder
While pain is the most obvious symptom of TMJ disorder, it is not the only one. Also, your jaw joints are unlikely to be the only areas affected. You can better determine when to seek help if you begin to notice any of the following signs:
- Lockjaw
- Clicking or popping jaw
- Difficulty chewing or biting down
- Pain throughout the jaw, neck, and head
- Ear ringing or frequent earaches
- Painful headaches and backaches
-
Pain forming behind your eyes
Types of TMJ Treatment
Our oral surgeons in Cypress are well-versed in the various ways to treat TMD. This is why we are pleased to offer custom occlusal splints and BOTOX® injections. Based on the information we collect during your consultation, we will develop a plan that includes how we will address the underlying cause of your TMJ and how our recommendations can ensure long-lasting results.
Occlusal Splint
If we recommend a custom occlusal splint, you can expect this unique device to create a more comfortable sleep experience. The cushioned oral appliance will fit inside your mouth and create a barrier between the upper and lower rows of teeth. While asleep, any grinding or clenching that occurs will not lead to enamel erosion because the appliance is absorbing the pressure. It will also cause your jaw to slightly adjust so that it remains in a more comfortable position, reducing tension on the joints for added relief.
BOTOX® Injections
Although we offer BOTOX® to remove wrinkles and fine lines, it can also be used to temporarily relieve jaw pain, creating a more comfortable way of life. When injecting the medication into the muscles surrounding your TMJs, it will begin to relax this area and prevent unnecessary movement that might otherwise cause tension or stress on your jaw joints.
