After a surgical tooth extraction<\/a>, most patients have a smooth recovery. Within a week or two, any post-op discomfort should be greatly reduced and normal oral function should be well on its way to returning. In rare cases, though, a complication known as dry socket occurs. What exactly is dry socket, and do you need to worry about it? This blog post offers practical information.<\/p>\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n

What Is Dry Socket?<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Dry socket, also called alveolar osteitis, is a complication that can happen after a tooth extraction. After a tooth comes out, a blood clot should form inside the empty socket. That clot acts like a natural bandage. It protects the bone and nerves beneath it while your body repairs the area.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Dry socket occurs when that clot does not form, dissolves too soon, or comes loose before the socket has had enough time to heal. When the bone and nerves become exposed, you may feel strong pain. The discomfort may travel toward your ear, temple, eye, or neck on the same side of your face.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The good news is that dry socket is not common for most patients. Reports often place the risk at about 0.5% to 5% for routine extractions, though the risk can rise for more complex procedures, such as lower wisdom tooth removal. Even then, most patients heal without any problems.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
